Julie Hoyle

Julie Hoyle: Impressed by the long list of Lord Mayors of London that dates back to 1189 when Henry FitzAilwin was elected and remained to his death in his 24th term, I started looking at portraits and etchings for inspiration for the For Arts' Sake London themed show.

In many of the portraits – the mayors are dressed to show their full pomp and circumstance and I wanted to see how much I could retain of that even if I reduced the figures to the simplest of outline and shape.

Then, perhaps showing the continuous life, growth and history of this office, I've mixed the shapes with the pattern that the peeling layers of bark make on the majestic London Plane Tree, for some harmony in the prints and in an attempt to unite these London mayors across the years.
